Dr. Jyotsna SharmaThe fast changing trends of globalization in 21st century influence education, culture, belief, ethics and policies as a whole. An era referred as the knowledge society which is characterized by rapid advancements in technology, digitization, innovation and the information. In this context, education plays a pivotal role and teachers play center role in assisting with the students of this transformation. Teacher’s competence and commitment is very important to ensure desirable results so preparing teachers to face challenges in a knowledge society is necessary. It involves equipping them with the skills, up to date information and knowledge to foster their critical thinking, creativity and lifelong learning among students.

Understanding the Knowledge Society

Knowledge society has been defined as a society that “nurtures diversities and competence” (UNESCO 2005. The Indian concept of knowledge society hails in Bhartiya Gyan Parampara which reflects “Jnana” which is pure and sublime. Traitriya Upanishad says that self-learning should never be abandoned- ‘स्वाध्याय न प्रमाद्त्व्व्यम’. It emphasize on life-long learning and continuous learning. Formation of character, inculcation of moral values, ethics is the centripetal force of Indian education system. There are many powerful expressions, which manifested the modification in one’s behavior, thoughtful listening, wise implementation of knowledge, quick wit, developing a scientific mindset, cultivation of knowledge from the nectar of Vedas, Purana’s and Upanishad’s. Quoting another beautiful example:

आचार्यात् पादमादत्ते पादं शिष्य स्वमेधया |

पादं सब्रह्मचारिभ्य: पादं काल क्रमेण च ||

It says one-fourth of the learning is done when the students is with teacher, one fourth of learning by the learner’s self-study, one-fourth by peer interaction and the last one comes by time as one matures and gain experiences. Here the question arises that do we have such morally strong and dedicated teachers who could shape the lives of many students. Do we prepare such teachers who could transform the future of our country? We all know the answer. Teaching as a profession is not at all priority. In fact this profession is considered as low profile carrier by sayings that “be a teacher, if you could not do anything in your life.” How dangerous this thought is as we hand over our children with a faith. After long years of school teaching they still remain average in their learning which ultimately impact their whole life. This shift impacts education systems globally. The traditional ways of teaching is increasingly being replaced by learner-centered models that emphasize exploration, problem-solving attitude, and digital literacy. Teachers are expected to transmit knowledge and help students to become beacons of knowledge themselves.

The Evolving Role of Teachers

In the knowledge society, the role of the teacher should be like an active facilitator of learning. Teachers must be:

Mentors and guides: Supporting students in discovering and questioning. Students must be keen and curious to know the subject.

Collaborators: Working with peers, students, parents, and communities.

Lifelong learners: a teacher should be learner so that they must update their skills and understanding of new pedagogies.

Technology Integration: Leveraging digital tools in day to day teaching methods.

Critical thinkers: like a critical thinker teacher must encourage the culture of experimentation in the classroom.

Teachers must have sharp knowledge of pedagogical, technological, and interpersonal competencies to nurture students. Teachers need to be proficient in the use of digital tools along with operating educational platforms, virtual learning, and communication technologies. More importantly, they should know how to integrate technology thoughtfully into their teaching. Factors like strong and sharp subject knowledge with best communication skills are essential to facilitate collaborative learning among students. Teachers should be skilled in using innovative teaching methodologies to present content in interesting way. Teacher should remember that in a globalized society, classrooms are increasingly diverse in nature so teachers need to be culturally aware and inclusive in their approaches to meet the needs of all learners from different cultural background.

Challenges in Preparing Teachers

While the need for teacher preparation is widely acknowledged, several challenges hinder effective teacher preparation like outdated teacher education programs. Many teacher education institutions especially private one do not bother about the well being of teachers. They are poorly paid; their working hours do not allow them to gain some professional knowledge. Due to demographic conditions, teachers lack access to basic infrastructure, technology, and professional development opportunities. Some educators are resistant to adopting new methods and technologies, often due to a lack of training or fear of the unknown. Rigid educational policies are one of the important factors which slow down reforms in teacher preparation. Heavy workloads and time pressures leave many teachers with little opportunity to pursue ongoing learning.

Strategies for Preparing Teachers

An effective strategy is required to effectively prepare teachers for the knowledge society, involving educational institutions, governments, and the broader community. Pre-service teacher education must be restructured to focus on Real-world teaching practice for developing the practical skills, digital literacy, critical thinking, and student-centered pedagogies.  In-service teachers must be provided with relevant professional development opportunities which can be delivered through workshops, online courses, mentoring programs, etc. Governments and institutions must invest in ICT infrastructure and training for teachers. National policies must prioritize teacher education through continuous discussion with them at every level. Feedback must be taken from teachers and must address their problems. Several countries have implemented innovative practices in teacher preparation like National Institute of Education, Singapore offers innovation and reflective teaching, Finland is known for its strong teacher training programs that emphasize research, pedagogical skills, and autonomy. Japan education system emphasizes on pragmatic approach, focusing on cultural values and its preservation. Such models demonstrate that with the right vision, investment, and collaboration, teacher preparation can be aligned with the needs of a knowledge society.

Conclusion

One of the most critical challenges facing education systems today is preparing teachers for the knowledge society. It requires a fundamental approach that how seriously we perceive teaching and learning. Teachers are the architects of the next generation of thinkers and leaders. Therefore, investing in teachers is a societal imperative. With the right support, training, and vision, teachers can become powerful agents of change. The world needs peace and benevolence in heart so that we can live peacefully and that could be done with the wise teachers who prepare leaders for a peaceful world.
