Government silent as Kashmiri vendors face attacks outside J&K: Yaseen

• PDF chief demands immediate measures for protection of traders

SRINAGAR: President of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) and former Minister, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, on Wednesday expressed grave concern over the growing incidents of attacks and harassment of Kashmiri vendors in various parts of the country, stating that such assaults have alarmingly become the “new normal.”

In a statement issued here, Yaseen said Kashmiri traders, artisans, and daily wage earners earning their livelihood outside Jammu and Kashmir are increasingly being targeted, intimidated, and subjected to violence with impunity. He termed the situation as deeply disturbing and a reflection of the government’s complete failure to ensure the safety and dignity of its citizens.

“The repeated attacks on Kashmiri vendors expose the hollow claims of normalcy and national integration. These individuals are simple breadwinners who contribute positively to local economies, yet they continue to live under fear due to growing intolerance and administrative apathy,” Yaseen said.

He strongly criticised the Centre and concerned state governments for failing to put in place effective mechanisms to protect Kashmiri citizens working outside the Union Territory. “Despite repeated assurances, no concrete steps have been taken to prevent such incidents or bring perpetrators to justice. Silence and inaction from the authorities only embolden anti-social elements,” he added.

Yaseen urged the Union Government to take immediate and decisive measures, including issuing strict advisories to state administrations, strengthening local police protection, and ensuring swift legal action against those involved in targeting Kashmiris.

He also appealed to civil society, political parties, and human rights organisations across the country to raise their voice against what he described as a “systematic pattern of discrimination and intimidation.” “Kashmiris are citizens of this country and deserve equal protection under the law. Their safety cannot be compromised under any pretext,” Yaseen asserted.
