JAMMU: The Department of Punjabi, University of Jammu, organised a one day National Conference on “Naarivaad ate Jammu & Kashmir da Punjabi Sahit” today. The conference, aimed to highlight feminist discourse and women’s representation in Punjabi literature, with a special focus on the regional context of Jammu and Kashmir, was inaugurated by Prof J.P Singh Joorel, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu, who happened to be the Chief Guest.
Speaking at the event, Prof. J. P. Singh Joorel highlighted the growing relevance of feminist perspectives in today’s society. He stressed that financial independence and access to education are crucial for women to articulate their experiences, assert their identities, and be heard on their own terms.
Earlier, Prof Sucheta Pathania, Head, Department of Punjabi, University of Jammu in her welcome address highlighted the relevance of Naarivaad in today’s socio-cultural landscape and stressed the need for academic engagement with feminist literature.
Renowned Punjabi writer Smt. Surinder Neer graced the occasion as the Special Guest. She shared her literary journey and spoke about the shortage of female punjabi literature writers in jammu and kashmir. She also spoke about the challenges and responsibilities of women writers in shaping progressive narratives within Punjabi literature.
The Keynote Address was delivered by Prof Jaspal Kaur, Department of Punjabi, University of Delhi, who presented an in-depth analysis of rights, importance, struggles and presence of women in different societies across the world. And the contribution of feminist themes in Punjabi literature and their evolution over time. Her lecture was widely appreciated for its scholarly insight and critical perspective.
Prof Baljeet Kour, Department of Punjabi, University of Jammu, also addressed the gathering and contributed to the academic discussions during the conference. Dr Pritam Singh, Assistant Professor managed the stage. Scholars, researchers, teachers, and students from various institutions participated in the conference, presenting papers and engaging in meaningful discussions. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr Harjinder Singh Assistant Professor department of punjabi University of Jammu.
