SRINAGAR: Mohammad Iqbal, a pioneering force behind the growth of Pencak Silat in India, was honoured with the Prestigious J&K Government Award 2026 as Athlete & Coach by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir on the occasion of Republic Day, January 26, in recognition of his exceptional dedication, discipline, and lifelong contribution to the Sport and youth engagement and outstanding performance of his Athletes at National and international level.
Based in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, Mohammad Iqbal is widely regarded as the architect of Pencak Silat in the region and currently serves as the National Coach. Over the past decade, he has played a decisive role in institutionalising, popularising, and professionalising the martial art across Jammu and Kashmir and the country.
Iqbalâs journey into martial arts began at the age of nine, shaped by personal experiences of neighbourhood bullying. His early training in different martial arts, before he discovered Pencak Silat in Korea in 2010âa turning point that would define his career. Since then, he has devoted himself to athlete training, coaching, event organisation, and building sustainable sports infrastructure.
Under his leadership, Pencak Silat has expanded, with participation from over 20,000 children and youth engagement in both genders. His efforts have translated into consistent national and international achievements, including Indiaâs debut in Pencak Silat as national coach at the 2018 Asian Games. He has also coached the Indian contingent at the World, Asian and international Championships, with several national training camps successfully organised in Srinagar.
In addition to his role as national coach, Mohammad Iqbal currently serves as Coach in J&K Sports Council, and also oversees operations at the Indoor Hall, Ellahi bagh Srinagar, contributing significantly to athlete development and sports administration in the Union Territory.
Mohammad Iqbal expressed gratitude and credited the collective efforts behind the success of sports in the region to Secretary Sports Council Ms. Nuzhat Gul and also extended his sincere thanks to the Honâble Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the Honâble Sports Minister for their continued support and visionary leadership in strengthening the sports ecosystem of the Union Territory.

The State Award stands as a testament to Mohammad Iqbalâs unwavering commitment to youth empowerment, discipline, and sporting excellence, and marks a significant milestone in the journey of Thang Ta and Pencak Silat in Jammu and Kashmir and India.
