AWANTIPORA: The Department of Mathematical Sciences, Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), organized One-Day Workshop today to commemorate National Statistics Day 2025. The workshop aimed to highlight the critical role of Statistics and Data Science in diverse domains and to promote awareness of their interdisciplinary applications. 

The key feature of the program was an invited lecture by Prof. Shalab from Department of Statistics and Data Science, IIT Kanpur titled “Journey of Statistics to Data Science” who provided an in-depth exposition of the evolution of Statistics into modern Data Science, elaborating on their fundamental interconnections and their growing relevance in the age of big data and artificial intelligence. An interactive session with Prof. Shalab further enriched the proceedings, enabling students, research scholars, and participants from various colleges across the valley to engage directly with the expert for effective knowledge exchange. The event witnessed active participation from faculty, research scholars, and students. 

Prof. A. H. Moon, Dean, Academic Affairs, IUST, stressed the indispensable contribution of Statistics to scientific innovation, technological advancement, and practical problem-solving while Dr. Abid H. Shalla, Dean, School of Sciences, reflected on the enduring contributions of Prof. P. C. Mahalanobis in shaping and advancing the Indian statistical system. Earlier, welcoming the guests Dr. Peer Bilal, Head Department of Mathematical Sciences, emphasized on the contemporary relevance of National Statistics Day in a data-driven world. The proceedings were moderated by Dr. Afaq Ahmad while the formal vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Mohd Younus.
