JAMMU: The Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing (DEE&RS), EIACP Hub J&K celebrated International Mountain Day 2025 today by organizing an educational trekking event inside the Environment Park, Jammu. The programme aimed at raising awareness about the significance of mountains, their fragile ecosystems and the need for sustainable management.
A 6-km to-and-fro trek was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Rajan Singh, Coordinator, EIACP Hub J&K. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 50 trekkers, including girl students from Department of Geography, Government Women College Gandhi Nagar, faculty members, project staff from NMSHE and EIACP, besides members of the DEERS team.
Participants trekked through designated Eco-trails inside the Environment Park, where resource persons highlighted the ecological importance of mountain landscapes, their role in climate regulation, biodiversity conservation and water security. The students were also sensitized to the threats posed by climate change, deforestation and unsustainable tourism.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajan Singh emphasized that mountains are vital for sustaining life, acting as water towers of the world and supporting rich biodiversity. He encouraged youth participation in conservation efforts and stressed the need to preserve Jammu & Kashmir’s unique mountain ecosystems.
