JAMMU: Central university of Jammu under the leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain, celebrated International Mother Earth Day today. The Department of Environmental Sciences in collaboration with students for development at the Central University of Jammu organized a series of events under the theme "Planet vs. Plastic," aimed at spotlighting the critical issue of plastic pollution and advocating for sustainable solutions. The day-long festivities brought together students, scholars, faculty, and experts to raise awareness and encourage collective action toward a cleaner and greener future.
The celebration commenced with a burst of colors as students showcased their creativity through vibrant rangoli designs, symbolizing the harmony between nature and human expression.
Dr. Ankit Tandon and Dr. Dinesh Kumar both faculties from Department of Environmental Sciences were the coordinators of the event. Dr. Ankit Tandon, led the inaugural session, by setting the tone for the day's discussions and activities. The distinguished lineup of speakers delved into the theme with depth and insight, addressing various facets of the planet's battle against plastic pollution.
Prof. Sunil Dhar, Dean Life Sciences, delivered a poignant address, shedding light on the dire consequences of plastic waste on our ecosystems and urging for immediate action. Prof. Deepak Pathania, Dean Research Studies, shared strategies for effective plastic waste management, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches and community engagement.
Prof. Richa Kothari, Head of the Department, while speaking on the occasion underscored the gravity of the plastic menace, highlighting its far-reaching impacts on biodiversity and human health. Dr. Pankaj Mehta provided additional perspective, emphasizing the importance of education and advocacy in combating plastic pollution.
The event also featured a captivating environmental awareness skit performed by students, illustrating the stark contrast between the beauty of our planet and the threat posed by plastic pollution. Through creative storytelling, the skit inspired attendees to rethink their consumption habits and embrace sustainable alternatives.
The highlights of the day was the Ecogiri stall, showcasing innovative solutions and eco-friendly products as alternatives to single-use plastics by the M.Sc. students of 2nd and 4th semester. From reusable bags to compostable packaging, the stall served as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that sustainable living is both achievable and rewarding. The event concluded with a quiz competition in which the M.Sc. students participated enthusiastically.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Shweta Yadav, Associate Dean International Affairs, expressed gratitude to Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Deans, Head, Faculty members and all the dignitaries, participants, scholars and students for making the event great success. With the theme, "Planet vs. Plastic", Earth Day celebration at the Central University of Jammu served as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to follow the path envisioned under the India-led global mass movement of Mission LiFE. Through education, advocacy, and collective action, we can overcome the challenges posed by plastic pollution and pave the way for a cleaner and healthier world. The event includes Ecogiri stall exhibition and SFD talk on the theme of this year’s Earth Day.
