JAMMU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raman Suri on Monday urged the National Conference (NC) government to immediately assess the damage caused by heavy rainfall and waterlogging in Jammu city and provide timely relief to affected people, saying that even a brief spell of rain had exposed serious shortcomings in urban drainage and water management systems.
Suri said the waterlogging witnessed across several areas of Jammu after just two hours of rainfall raises serious questions about the preparedness of the administration and the functioning of civic infrastructure. He said roads inundated with rainwater, inadequate drainage and inconvenience to commuters and pedestrians highlight the urgent need for corrective measures rather than temporary responses after every spell of rain.
He urged the government to direct the concerned departments, including the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and other civic agencies, to conduct a comprehensive assessment of damage to roads, public infrastructure, shops, houses and other properties wherever waterlogging has caused losses. Officials should visit the affected localities, document the damage and extend assistance to eligible families, traders and other affected persons without unnecessary delay.
Suri said that rainfall and monsoon showers are recurring features of Jammu’s climate and cannot be treated as unexpected events every year. The administration must ensure that drains are cleaned well in advance, water outlets remain unobstructed, vulnerable stretches are identified and road infrastructure is properly maintained to prevent flooding.
He further stressed that sensitive and repeatedly waterlogged locations should be identified and permanent solutions implemented through coordinated action by the departments concerned. Merely pumping out accumulated water or clearing roads after rainfall is not enough; the focus must be on preventing the recurrence of such problems.
The BJP leader also called for accountability wherever negligence, poor maintenance or inadequate planning is found to have contributed to the situation. He said that public inconvenience, traffic congestion and difficulties faced by pedestrians cannot be allowed to become an annual feature in a city that is steadily expanding and developing.
Suri urged the government to act on priority, assess the losses on the ground, provide appropriate relief to those affected and strengthen Jammu’s drainage infrastructure to ensure that residents do not have to suffer similar hardships every time it rains.
