In loving memory of Dr. Priya Ranjan: A mentor who treated me like family

JAMMU: The Prosecution Department of Jammu & Kashmir announced significant outcomes secured by its Prosecutors, reflecting their meticulous preparation, legal acumen and unwavering commitment to justice.

In FIR No. 109/2022 of Police Station Batamaloo, the Additional Sessions Judge, Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Bhat, on 13 October 2026 convicted three accused persons namely Hafeeza Begum, Parveez Ahmad Dar and Shahnawaz Ahmad Dar under Sections 302 and 120-B IPC for the smothering death of a young married woman at her matrimonial home. The case rested on circumstantial evidence. The Public Prosecutor Riyaz Ahmed painstakingly led witnesses, established medical proof and built an unbroken chain of circumstances, invoking Section 106 of the Evidence Act. The Court found the chain so complete as to leave no reasonable ground for doubt. Quantum of Sentence is listed for 14 October 2026.

In another case in State v. Mohd Aslam Bhat (Police Station Maisuma), the Principal District & Sessions Judge, Srinagar, Tasleem Arief, on 18 September 2026 allowed the Prosecution's appeal against an acquittal in a fatal road accident case. The Public Prosecutor, Ajaz Ahmad Najar persuaded the Court that evidence was closed prematurely, without adequate opportunity to examine material witnesses. The acquittal order was set aside and accused directed to face the trial with the direction to trial court to give reasonable opportunities to the Prosecution to adduce evidence.

Moreover, the Additional Sessions Judge Doda, Archana Charak, on 9 October 2026 rejected the bail application of NDPS accused namely Mohd Arif in FIR No. 239/2026 (Police Station Doda). The court accepted the objections of Additional Public Prosecutor Raj Kumar that the accused had repeatedly committed similar offences and was at risk of repeating the offence. Furthermore, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Shopian, Rayaz Ahmed Choudhary, on 12 October 2026 rejected bail application of four accused persons namely Jahangir Nazir, Akash Nazir, Sahil Shabir and Aamir Ahmed Dar in FIR No. 147/2026, in an Assault and Robbery case. The Asst. Public Prosecutor, Mohd Yaseen Najar in his objections presented a factual matrix that tied the accused to a connected sequence of violent offences, backed by medical evidence, Supreme Court precedent and highlighted the risk of witness intimidation.

These results reflect long hours, close study of case files and persistent courtroom advocacy. The Department commends all Prosecutors involved and reaffirms its resolve to pursue every case diligently and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.
