KATRA: The National Service Scheme (NSS), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) conducted a Menstrual Health Awareness Session and Sanitary Napkin Distribution Programme at Government High School, Sirah, with the aim of promoting menstrual hygiene, health awareness and dignity among adolescent girls.
The programme focused on creating an open and informed understanding of menstruation and menstrual hygiene, encouraging students to view menstruation as a natural biological process rather than a subject surrounded by hesitation or stigma.
The awareness session provided an opportunity for students to learn about the importance of maintaining proper hygiene and adopting healthy practices during menstruation. As part of the initiative, sanitary napkins were distributed among the students, complementing the awareness session with practical support.
The initiative emphasized that menstrual health awareness must go hand in hand with access to essential menstrual hygiene products, particularly for young students in the community.
The interaction also encouraged students to ask questions and develop greater confidence in discussing menstrual health. By combining awareness, education and direct support, NSS SMVDU sought to contribute towards building a more informed and supportive environment where girls can manage menstruation safely, confidently and with dignity.
The programme reflected the core NSS values of service, empathy and community engagement, extending the spirit of “Not Me But You” beyond the university campus and into the surrounding community. Such initiatives provide students with meaningful opportunities to serve society while addressing important issues affecting everyday lives.
The event concluded with a positive message on the importance of menstrual health, hygiene and dignity, reaffirming the commitment of NSS SMVDU towards community welfare and empowering young people through awareness and meaningful social initiatives. NSS Programme Coordinator Dr. Rajiv Kumar appreciated the efforts of volunteers for organizing the event.
