• Nukkad Natak highlights water conservation, community participation, sustainable water management

KATHUA: Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), Jammu and Kashmir, in collaboration with the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), organised Nukkad Natak series at Basohli Utsav 2026 to promote water conservation, cleanliness and judicious use of water.

Organised under the Jal Utsav framework for continuous engagement and cultural connect with water, the initiative used live theatre to spread awareness and encourage collective responsibility towards protecting water resources.

The Nukkad Natak highlighted challenges posed by pollution, wastage and unsustainable practices. The performance conveyed that preserving water resources requires responsible human action. It emphasised that water-supply infrastructure alone cannot ensure long-term water security. Protection of natural springs and streams, conservation of catchment areas, rainwater harvesting, prevention of pollution and judicious water use are equally essential.

In line with the vision of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, the initiative highlighted community participation, local ownership of drinking-water systems and protection of water sources for future generations. It reiterated that water conservation is a shared responsibility of government departments, households, communities and individuals.

A digital screen installed at the festival venue is also showcasing JJM’s efforts and achievements, along with messages on water conservation and sustainable water management.

Being celebrated from October 19 to 21, Basohli Utsav 2026 showcases the region’s rich cultural heritage, traditional art forms, tourism potential and local economy. The festival features Basohli miniature paintings, Ramleela, folk performances, traditional sports, local cuisine and Ravi Aarti, among other attractions.

The collaboration highlights the role of cultural platforms in promoting public awareness and reinforcing the message that access to safe drinking water must go hand in hand with protecting natural resources.
