JAMMU: In a strongly worded statement, BJP senior leader and spokesperson Dr. Tahir Chowdhary condemned the violent incident at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu that saw junior doctors physically assaulted by a patient’s attendant. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 AM in Ward Number 1 of the Medicine Department, has left the medical community and the general public in shock.
According to reports, after the death of Rajinder Kumar—a patient admitted on July 11 with a severe brain hemorrhage—his attendant allegedly turned violent, physically assaulting two junior doctors, Dr. Aayushi and Dr. Ruchika, in full public view. The shocking incident, blamed on alleged negligence, triggered an immediate strike by resident doctors, leading to the suspension of OPD, in-patient care, and even emergency services.
While the hospital administration scrambled to deploy senior doctors to manage critical care, overall patient treatment was severely disrupted. An FIR was registered, and the incident drew sharp condemnation from medical associations including the Indian Medical Association and Doctors Association Jammu.
Addressing this deeply concerning episode, Dr. Tahir Chowdhary stated "Such acts of violence against our medical professionals are completely unacceptable. Our junior doctors are the backbone of our healthcare services, and their safety must be uncompromised. The brutality witnessed at GMC Jammu not only undermines the integrity of the medical profession but also endangers the quality of patient care. We call upon the authorities to take swift and decisive action, to send a clear message that violence against healthcare workers will not be tolerated."
Dr. Chowdhary further urged the government to implement stricter security protocols at all healthcare institutions to prevent future assaults, adding: "Protecting the lives and dignity of our medical staff is not optional—it is essential. Only when doctors feel safe can they serve patients without fear." He emphasized that ensuring the safety and security of doctors is critical to sustaining efficient healthcare delivery, especially in times of crisis.
As the investigation continues and the junior doctors remain on strike demanding justice, Dr. Chowdhary's remarks resonate with a broader national concern over increasing incidents of violence in healthcare settings.
