UDHAMPUR: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary today conducted an extensive tour of Udhampur district, inspecting ongoing development works and reviewing progress at key project sites.

He inspected the Public Works Department (PWD) road project from Jakhani Naka Point via Lower Balli, being executed under the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). Expressing concern over the slow pace of work, he directed the executing agencies to accelerate progress and complete the project by December 20, 2026.

Choudhary instructed the Superintending Engineer to closely monitor the project and ensure strict compliance with prescribed quality standards. He also directed the agencies to deploy adequate manpower and machinery and asked the Executive Engineer, PWD, to issue a show-cause notice to the contractor over the slow progress.

The Deputy Chief Minister also inspected the construction site of the 165-metre-span steel-girder, double-lane motorable Salmay Bridge over the River Tawi on the Udhampur–Ghordi road. The bridge is being constructed under NABARD. He directed the executing agencies to mobilise adequate manpower and machinery, speed up construction and complete the project within its stipulated timeline without compromising on quality.

During the tour, Choudhary visited Government Girls Middle School, Sharda, where he checked the teaching staff’s attendance register and enquired about the sanctioned strength of teachers and available infrastructure. Interacting with students and teachers, he encouraged students to stay focused on their studies, work hard and strive to achieve their goals.

He later visited Sharda Mata Temple and paid obeisance, praying for peace, prosperity and the well-being of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The Deputy Chief Minister emphasised the need to expedite all ongoing development projects by deploying additional manpower and machinery and adopting double-shift operations wherever necessary. He stressed that all projects must meet prescribed quality standards and be completed within their respective deadlines.

Choudhary was accompanied by Chief Engineer, PWD R&B, Chenab Zone, Batote, Ashok Kumar Khokhar; Superintending Engineer, PWD R&B Circle Udhampur–Ramban, Shivangi Gupta; Assistant Commissioner Revenue Dr. Umesh Shan; and other concerned officers.
